CV Format


Curriculum vitae or CV is basically an overview of a candidate’s career interests, qualifications, work skills and experiences. It is generally the first document submitted in response to job vacancies and is primarily used by recruiters to screen applications for interview. It, thus, serves as a preface to one’s job application and is the ground on which a candidate makes the first impression on potential employers. Owing to the crucial role it plays on the career of a job seeker, it is needless to say how important it is for the CV to be composed in the correct format.

The generally accepted format of a CV is a brief career summary that constitutes of all relevant details about a person’s life that might give the authority a valid reason to choose that application over the others. The most commonly used format comprises of the following parts:

  • Name and contact information of the candidate.
  • Personal information that may be relevant to the job application.
  • Career objective stating the job position sought and the career envisioned therein.
  • Educational qualifications.
  • Technical skills that may prove to be useful in the job sector.
  • Work history, the experiences of which might contribute to his present career.
  • Achievements/ awards that might give the candidate an edge over the others.
  • References, if any.
